Susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI).
Susceptibility differences between tissues can be utilized as a new type of contrast in MRI that is different from spin density, T1-, or T2-weighted imaging. Signals from substances with different magnetic susceptibilities compared to their neighboring tissue will become out of phase with these tissues at sufficiently long echo times (TEs). Thus, phase imaging offers a means of enhancing contra...

We report 2 patients with migraine with aura, in whom SWI showed transient prominence of the venous vasculature within areas of impaired perfusion. The findings resolved spontaneously in both patients. This imaging technique may play a helpful role in assessing the vascular events in migraine with aura.

متن کاملImaging cerebral amyloid angiopathy with susceptibility-weighted imaging.
Gradient-echo (GE) imaging is recognized as a means to detect hemorrhagic changes in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). However, almost 25% of patients with CAA do not show microhemorrhages on T2* GE imaging. We applied a new imaging method, susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI), to evaluate the presence of microhemorrhages. In a suspected case of CAA, where cognitive effects are also present, ...
